Customer Reviews - Bernie R

Bernie R
63 y/o with a modest wine collection which usually ranges between 100- 200 bottles. Since I live in Washington state, I make about four visits a year to those wineries to sample the product. But I have California roots and try to keep up on the Sonoma and Napa wines as well. My knowledge of French and Italian wines is limited. I like cabs, pinots, chards, and prefer to find wines in the 15-25 dollar range which taste like more expensive wines (don't we all). I will generally buy one bottle and then retest it if I like it before buying several bottles to a case. I guess you could call me a value-conscious connoisseur. I drink wine almost every day.

The last time I bought a bottle of wine from Argentina and/or Chile, I told myself "That's the last bottle of South American wine I will ever purchase." Then Robert Parker gave this wine 91 points, and I purchased one bottle. I don't get it. It is a little too intense and too lively with acidity for my taste. But after an hour in a decanter, it did come around and I could taste the nuances of oak, fruit, and minerality. Not exceptionally well balanced, but a decent wine at this price.

I just checked the "my wine list." I have had 13 bottles of this stuff, so I must like it. It honestly is as good as most 12-15 dollar Chards. It is the perfect wine for when you have the neighbor or friend stop by who think you are the sommeliere for the neighborhood or when you want a Tuesday wine and it actually is Tuesday. My friend who thinks she does not need to bring wine when she is invited to our house for dinner, movies, brunch, (you name it) is coming by tomorrow, and I am out of The Prince. So I need to order bottle numbers 14 and 15.

I was advised at KL to decant this wine and let it breathe. I did so, and three hours of decanting did the trick and the fruit finally emerged and the hot alcolhol subsided. An enjoyable drink, but nothing spectacular. There are many sub 20 dollar bottles of Napa, Sonoma, and Washington reds that are far more satisfying and that you don't have to work that hard for. The pain was not worth the gain.

This pleasant Chard has a very nice balance of fruit, acidity, and minerality which is as satisfying as wines twice the price.
