I'm a newbie oenophile still exploring the breadth and depth of wines of the world.

This is fantastic stuff. It's smooth but with enough edge to not be cloying. I bought the last two at RWC, please get more! :)

Grabbed this out of the cooler somewhat randomly. What a great find. Hoppy yet smooth, it was the perfect thing to wash down some spicy shrimp tacos. And a nice price, too!

Hair of the Dog "Fred" Golden Special Ale, Oregon 12oz
Review Date: 9-27-2010
Grabbed this out of the cooler somewhat randomly. I was expecting it to be fairly dry, but omigosh was it sweet and viscous. As my wife put it "not bad if you don't think of it as beer". No rating because it's just not my thing. Next time I'll ask the guys in the store for advice!

2005 Two Hands "Bad Impersonator" Shiraz Barossa Valley (out of stock)

I'm not a big fan of shiraz, so when I opened this bottle to accompany some pizza, I didn't expect much, and indeed it didn't leave much of an impression. However, I ended up leaving half the bottle to the next day (closed, but not vacuumed or otherwise preserved) and it was much more interesting upon the second tasting. The wine is almost opaque, a dark red-black color. I found cassis, stewed plums, and maybe some wet asphalt in the nose. In the mouth, it was full-bodied, with lots of dark fruit and some spice notes; it reminded me somehow of the savory-sweet sauce used in the Chinese dish "General's Chicken". The wine had a nice structure--not too plush--with pleasant tannins. While it didn't have a lot of layered complexity, each sip led readily to the next. I'd gladly drink it again, but I'd probably run it through a Vinturi to help it open up.

2007 Carballal "Sete Cepas" Albariño Rias Baixas, Spain (out of stock)

My wife and I drank the Sete Cepas last night with shrimp tacos she made from a recipe in "Real Simple: Meals Made Easy". The combination blew our minds... the wine perfectly complimented the sweetness of the shrimp, the smoky, earthy flavors of the roasted tomatillo salsa and the richness of the sour cream sauce. We also discovered after dinner that this wine is not only food-friendly, but also sippin' friendly--enough, but not too much acidity, and some interesting flavors going on. It was far too easy to polish off the bottle. In fact, I'm back on this page for the express purpose of ordering two more!

2007 Bodegas Luzon, Luzon, Jumilla, Spain (out of stock)
Review Date: 5-11-2009
As a fan of both mourvedre (monastrell) and syrah, I was excited to try this wine. I found it to be robust, yet quite drinkable. It strikes me as a very "honest" wine where the varietal characteristics shine. The meaty, spicy notes went really well with cheeseburgers I grilled Saturday afternoon. Definitely a great quality-to-price ratio, and worth buying a case to have on hand for summer BBQs.

2000 Verdignan Rouge, Haut-Médoc (out of stock)
Review Date: 5-11-2009
I picked up a bottle of this wine over the weekend, and opened it to accompany a plate of aged gouda on rosemary crackers. I really enjoyed the combination--the wine had enough "oomph" for the cheese, while the mild herbal tones on the palate complemented the crackers. The wine is drinking very nicely, and seems like a real bargain for a Bordeaux with bottle age, especially at the wine club price.
