Customer Reviews - Paul Burt

Paul Burt
57 years old wine explorer and drinker. Have traveled the the world and had wine on every continent they make it and in many, many countries also. My revelation wine was from a Hunter Valley Semillion that I had with a tremendous diner in Freemantle, Australia. I knew wine and food was where it was at for me. That was 1977.

Love wines from everywhere and am still looking for the perfect "QPR" wine....and that's the fun - the search and all that wine.

A wine that is not for everyone. Ruby red in the glass with a slight separation ring. Heat, red berry fruits - cherry, pomegranate, strawberry, spice and vanilla and more heat. It takes about 15-20 minutes for the heat to blow in the glass, but after settling down the the fruit remains, slightly astringent and linear, but pleasing. The finish bold and tart cherry mainly with no discernible tannic structure but loads of acidity that dominates. Unique, interesting wine - needs short term (9-12 months) cellaring to flesh out a little. Paul

Geez, as the comedian Ron White says - "looooooadeeddddddd"...with spice, I add. Medium red in the glass with a slight ring. Forest floor, dark cherry, blueberry, plum, chocolate, anise and a teaser of large baking spice on the nose. The palate is a completely unique experience for me. The fruit is very good, young and fresh and it follows well, as do the anise, earthy tones and chocolate. However, this is all about the spice which is LARGE, blanced and a beautiful additional sensory experience that I've never had before. Outstanding bottle of wine. Drink now through 2016 - Paul

Amazing wine for under $10. QPR defined. Dark garnet in the glass. Notes of dark cherry, cassis, blackberry, pepper, chocolate, brown spices and vanillin from oak. What a nose! The heat from the alcohol drifts off after some time in the glass and from there the fruits take over. The tannins turn slightly dark cherry sweet and, though they are full bodied, are covered by the fruit nicely. The dark cherry notes develops well and lingers on in a well defined aftertaste driven by good acidity. Honestly - this has all the parts to last well into 2017 with proper cellaring. Ready drink or hold - what a wine - Paul

Bright. On the nose, on the palate and in the glass. A shimmering inky juice in the glass. Great nose - effusive dark berry fruits - blackberry, boysenberry - with chocolate, earthy notes and spice lead on the nose. The mid-palate is great with layered mocha, anise really hitting the right notes with the fruit. The tannins are pulling the fruit, but are not dominant, to the well balanced acidic aftertaste. This should cellar well for 2-4 yrs and drink well for 5-6. Drink or hold, decant for now - Paul

Dark magenta in the glass. Black berry, black cherry, raspberry, mocha and spice with a light vanilla and swirling citrus aromas lead to a medium bodied, fleshy palate. The fruit follows and provides a sweet tannic backdrop with additional anise, oak and herbal notes. Juicy acidity leads a good lingering aftertaste. Well done for the style. With proper cellaring this will go until 2015. Drink now - Paul

3.5? This? Me? Why? Body. The nose is fairly sparse with red berry fruits, plum, some toasty oak develops, light spice fill out the aromas. The body is light structured, not the broader wine of the last 4 vintages. I was ready for tannins dark berries and all that stuff - what I got was rounded red fruit, light tannins, a less than lingering aftertaste. This is a pork, chicken type of wine - not that it's bad...it is a good wine, just different from Famille Perrin. Drink now. Paul

Very good with a refreshing acidic finish that says pair me with food. A full blow hay color in the glass. Melon, apple with citrus, lanolin and a nice nutty edge to the nose. This starts with a sweetish mid-palate push that turns on a dime with a spice pop and then a lingering, juicy acidic cut. Different and well done. Drink now - Paul

WOW!! As if they needed more wines to brag about they do this. 2 killer vintages in a row and I get the feeling it has a LOT to do with the wine making team. It starts with finding the right fruit and knowing what to do with it. Full throttle, this bring out the best of great merlot and syrah with a strong cabby body. Notes of blackberry, violets, purple pansy, pepper, chocolate, cigar box, earthy notes, oak and...well, I'm tired now...on to the palate. Succulent fruit that is sorta jammy yet sharp with rounded dark cherry tannins and outstanding spice mounting the fruit for a ride. Long aftertaste, simmering and good finish an outstanding $11 wine. Get this CC offering. Killer stuff.

Was originally at an 3.5 - but this is shy youngster, just coming out of it's shell. It's telling because of what the future holds...and it is bright indeed. A hybrid from cabernet sauvignon and grenache. You'd be thinking dark berry fruit, spice, pepper, tannins - maybe additional earthy notes, wood and vanilla & chocolate. You'd also be right. The tannins are rounded and gripping and nose & palate are tied together well. Juicy and medium bodied this is wonderful. A real feather in the K&L hat.Long live marselan. Paul

I've always thought that zins were my 1st real love of big wines, partly because there were no others and petite sirah hadn't become the staple that it became. Big, brooding power was about where they were - sadly many are gone. No so with this. Tannic, muscular and long lived are the major traits here. Deep ruby and a small defused ring in the glass. Where to start - blackberry, blueberry, cassis fruit with oak, vanilla notes, raspberry and spice with brambly earthiness. Complex. The tannins are dry and large, suggesting big extraction and come back with a pop. The fruit is now mainly blackberry, currant with chocolate enveloping all. There is also vanilla from oak, pepper, brown spice, coffee. The acidity comes back from the dead to provide a juicy aftertaste. If you like 'em big drink now, otherwise wait for 2-3 and drink for 5-7. Outstanding. Paul

No wonder it made the WS top 100. Year in and year out this wine shines and shines. Griping tannins, plenty of fruit and bright acidity give this a strong glass presence and lengthy mouthfeel.

The obvious choice is...what else...italian. For something different try and italian stew with cheese tortellini. Enjoy!!!

This is a big meaty wine. Full bore blueberry, currant and big tannins...this wine is comparible to those that cost 4-5 times as much. This will sit in the cellar for 3-5 years and drink well for 5-7. Goes well with steak, especially grilled, and hearty beef dishes. Can't believe the QPR for this wine. Amazing. Decant.

A bit smokey, but simple decanting for a half hour will knock that out, and then the fruit takes over and you have a juicy, fruity pinot for less than $10.

Kudos for the effort. Makes my top 10 for under $10.

Outstanding. This may be the best Merlot blend coming out of France (The '06 is just as good.)for under $25. The dark berry fruit and the layered spice due to the wonderful cellar work make this special. This is wonderful with lamb, pork ka-bobs and grilled chicken.

Will cellar wonderfully for 2-3 years. Decant for now.

Hearty wine that stands up well to grilled beef with sauces and seasoning. Inky purple with velvet striations in the glass the nose hits with spice, dark berry fruits and cassis. On the palate the fruits open up and spice is added to it for a lingering mouth feel. Well done for this price point.
