2011 Te Mata "Estate" Cabernets/Merlot Hawkes Bay New Zealand
Review Date: 3-8-2014

This is a fantastic value for any fan of hearty Cab/Merlot blends. A rich, dark fruit core and just enough tannin structure and spice make this a very serious wine for not a lot of money.

2010 Te Mata "Coleraine" Bordeaux Blend Hawkes Bay
Review Date: 3-8-2014

The lesser known, warmer weather bay of the New Zealand wine country, Hawkes Bay is capable of producing world-class Cabernet and Syrah, and this bottle is one of its best. The skills of the Te Mata winemakers shine in this Bordeaux blend from a great vintage. Richer than most Bordeaux but still balanced and delicious, it has incredible layers of flavors with a good backbone and just a touch of leather.

2012 Te Whare Ra (TWR) Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough New Zealand

The biodynamic Te Whare Ra estate produces very expressive, quintessential cool weather wines. They like acid in their wines and it shows. Their Sauv Blanc is always one of our best, with searing bright melon and flowers that leave a lasting impression on the palate.

Classic New Zealand Pinot from this cool weather estate. This beauty is bright and sharp, with lean red fruit, plenty of acidity, and a long finish.

1989 Cragganmore 23 Year Old Faultline Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml

I don't say things are perfect very often, especially when rating wine and spirits, but this Cragganmore might be. The pedigree of the distillery is well known (it was always the great whisky writer Michael Jackson's favorite), but it takes a special barrel like this to show what the distillery can really do. The evolution of flavor in this malty beast is incredible, and your taste buds will thank you with every sip. A perfect representation of Speyside, it starts with toasted almonds and light caramel flavors that warp into a mixture of coffee, leather, and chili spices. Beautiful whisky!

Great release here from a well known distillery that never puts out distillery bottlings in the U.S. This single malt does the best when it is expressed with sherry barrels like this one: dark, decadent and very rich.

Lot 40 Rye 2012 Release Canadian Whisky 750ml
Review Date: 1-20-2014

Now that's some good drinkin'! This rye is rich and delicious, with vanilla and chocolate notes over classic rye leather and cracked pepper--perfect on its own or for all your Manhattan needs. Not as sweet as some of the LDI stuff coming out of Indiana, not as dry as some of 100% rye Rittenhouse styled whiskeys in our store--it's just right.

Michel Couvreur 12 Year Overaged Malt Whisky 750ml

It's been a while since we've had Couvreur on our shelves, and this bottling is worth the wait. Rich malt flavors hide behind subtle peat smoke, with long-lasting caramel and coffee notes finishing off every sip. This is an incredible single malt and well worth the asking price.

The wines of this Abalos producer are of staggering quality for the price. This reserva is full of plum and pepper spice with a decadent red fruit core that's been rounded out with its extra age. $20 for this exceptional bottle--worth every penny and then some.

2010 Botanica Pinot Noir Elgin South Africa
Review Date: 12-6-2013

The Botanica is a gorgeous, coastal South African Pinot that rivals anything from New Zealand to North America in this price range. Bright acidity and fresh fruit complement an underlying dusty finish, with more finesse and complexity than anyone should expect from a $20 bottle. Magnificent!

2012 Alheit Vineyards "Cartology" Chenin Blanc Western Cape
Review Date: 12-5-2013

This is the reason South Africa has tried to make chenin blanc a national wine identity- it grows fantastically in the South African climate and soils and can produce wines like this. The cartology is almost chenin blanc perfection- a finely tuned balance of white flower, honey, light fruit and minerality. In my opinion, it is the best South African white we have to offer.

Still kicking, still beautiful! I thought this was the most vibrant of the cellared riojas we are importing, with bright cherry and clove flavors still intact behind layers of smoke and pepper. Lean, aged to perfection, and still delicious!

2012 Carlos Diaz "Estrela" Ribeira Sacra
Review Date: 12-4-2013

A fantastic price for an excellent wine! The diaz is all the finesse and bright mencia fruit you should expect from a well made ribeira sacra. Elegant, peppery, with firm acidity and raspberry fruits, this is an excellent pinot alternative for those wanting something different and something Spanish. At this price- do not pass this one up.

1982 Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Reserva
Review Date: 11-26-2013
Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image
There is something in the molecular structure of the Tempranillo grape that lets them age forever. Tannin in Rioja is never too powerful, acidity is never too high, but these wines have the potential to age gracefully for many decades. This release of the monte real is testament to the aging capability of Tempranillo. It is an older wine, and shows all the earth, wet vanilla, and gamey character you'd expect, but its elegance and integrated complexity are beautiful, showing better than many Cabernets and Bordeaux with similar age.
