Singani 63 Bolivian Muscat Brandy 750ml
Review Date: 9-15-2014

Seriously one of the coolest things I have tasted in a while. It's amazing how this retained so much of the pure Muscat flavor profile through distillation. Fantastically floral aromatics, very delicate and yet flavorful all at the same time. Like the finest Muscat-based wines this is not about sweetness but about perfume and delicacy on the palate. I can only imagine what people will think up to do with this intriguing little spirit but it is certainly something worth having on your bar.

2012 Banshee Sonoma County Pinot Noir

Another really solid effort from Banshee. A juicy, richer style of Pinot Noir that still has good lift and balance. Dark cherry, vanilla, clove and baking spice. Soft and supple with good mid-palate weight and texture. Seriously crowd friendly Pinot for holiday parties etc. Very good value for Pinot of this quality in the $20ish price point. Easy to drink, easy to love!

2011 Dog Point Chardonnay Marlborough
Review Date: 9-8-2014

Very complex and edgy Chard that walks a very interesting and tense line between breadth and linearity. The nose opens with flint, struck match, spicy white oak and freshly picked pears. I expected a very focused linear type wine and yet the palate exploded with rich baked orchard fruits, brioche, even kettle corn-like caramelization...a big rich Chard with soft round texture and weight on the palate. Just when I thought I was fooled back came the stunningly bright acidity and focus. Minerals, citrus zest, flint. A long mouthwatering finish that leaves the taste buds tingling. Wow what a journey in one sip!

2011 Dog Point Pinot Noir Marlborough

A lovely example of deep, complex Marlborough Pinot. The nose shows plum preserve, spicy red fruits, rhubarb, anise and sandalwood. The palate accurately matches the nose and has some well defined, integrated, fine tannin. Medium-bodied, the wine has a nice combination of expressive fruit, structure and deeper more savory complexities. Dog Point showing again that they make some great multi-layered, intriguing wines from a region so often unfairly pinned as a one trick pony.

Racy and delicious! Love this zesty, fresh, mouthwatering little wine. Lime peel, coriander, white flowers and crunchy green apple. Great seafood wine, ultimately refreshing and palate cleansing. Ummmmm!

2012 Thistle Ridge (Grey's Peak) Pinot Noir Waipara Valley
Review Date: 8-28-2014

2nd label to the highly popular Grey's Peak Pinot Noir, giving quite similar flavors at considerably less expense. The fruit here is all estate and made in the same way as its kin. Hand picking, wild yeast ferment in French oak barriques. Lots of rich, exotic dark fruit, Asian spice, dried herbs, dark earth and subtle barrel notes. Silky and soft on the palate, medium bodied, this really over delivers for the price. It also picked up a Pure Elite Gold Medal at the ANZWA and was a finalist for the Best NZ Pinot Trophy which was eventually won by its big brother the Grey's Peak bottling!

2010 Mount Langi Ghiran "Billi Billi" Shiraz Grampians Victoria
Review Date: 8-26-2014
Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image
A great deal in Shiraz. From the cooler climate of the Grampians Mountain range in Victoria, this is a balanced style of Shiraz with plenty of fruit and concentration but also great structure and brightness. Mostly red fruited with some meat and black pepper nuances. Good mineral structure from the granitic soils and long, temperate growing season. Mt. Langhi's high end wines have a long held reputation of utmost quality but this entry level bottle shows they can hold their own in the value category as well! Fantastic value at $9.99! Crazy!

2013 Riposte "The Dagger" Pinot Noir Adelaide Hills South Australia

Screaming deal! Rich, medium-full bodied Pinot with great purity of fruit and silky smooth texture. Lots of exotic dark red fruits, toasted spices, suave oak, bramble fruit and cocoa dust. Really packs lot of flavor for such an inexpensive bottle, drinks above it's price point for powerful Pinot. Perfectly ripe and rich but without too much Alc (only 13.5%). Direct from the Importer pricing and big points means this is deal to be snapped up ASAP!

2013 Muddy Water Sauvignon Blanc Waipara Valley
Review Date: 8-22-2014

Really pretty special Savvy. So rich and full of flavor and excellent lush texture. Juicy ripe fruit, mandarin, melon and Meyer lemon plus a fascinating lees element from the barrel ferment and maturation. Just a touch of yeasty tones and very subtle suggestion of oak means this is a very complex wine beyond the initial fruit attack. Organically farmed. Wild yeast ferment. Very minimal intervention winemaking. Excellent stuff!

2012 Mount Trio Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot Great Southern

Wow, seriously $11.99! One of the best value Cabs I have tasted from anywhere...ever! From a small family estate in Porongurup (a region that is quickly establishing itself as one of the most exciting cool climate areas in Australia). Dense, concentrated dark fruits, sweet spices, chocolate hints and pipe tobacco. Broad and fleshy on the palate with excellent power and definition. Ripe tannins that are soft and silky, fresh acidity to balance the richness of the fruit. Really exceptional value for big cab drinkers. Would be a great deal at $20 so at this price it's a steal!

Super cool Pinot Noir from Tasmania. Very elegant, bright and juicy. Lovely, fine, soft structure. Pure fruit, sweet spice and a sprinkle of dusty earth. A perfect wine for lighter dishes when you still feel like a glass of red. For grilled salmon, chicken etc. Super easy-drinking and the price is spot-on for everyday enjoyment. I will be drinking this wine regularly this summer / fall. An exciting (and excellent value) first direct import from Tasmania!

2012 Pisa Range Estate "Black Poplar Block" Pinot Noir Central Otago
Review Date: 8-17-2014

Profound Pinot. Very deep and layered. Starts out with its quite beautiful bright purple / red color and vivid hues. The nose is haunting with spiced violets, thyme, black cherry compote and crushed slate. On the palate the wine is rich and energetic. Layers of dark berries, black cherry, damson plum, and toasted spices. Under all of these flavors is a fascinating vein of raw minerality and slightly wild bramble character. Plenty metamorphic soil qualities showing here in flavor and texture. Despite being quite concentrated and powerful there is nothing heavy or highly extracted about the wines, it is not viscous on the palate but rather lithe and dynamic. This wine again shows the incredible quality to be found in the 2012 Central Otago Pinots. Many believe it is the best vintage ever for the region and after glass of wine like this I can see why!

2012 Mount Trio Estate Riesling Porongurup Western Australia

Limey, juicy, floral and fresh. Lovely pure, dry Riesling. Tons of citrus flavors, preserved lemon, marmalade laced with stoney minerals and white blossom. Real drive and presence on the palate with med+ acidity and a mouthwatering finish. Exceptional value in Riesling. This wine just makes me wonder more than ever why Riesling isn't very popular...I could drink this every night! It also shows how this region is producing some of Australia's most exciting aromatic whites.

2011 Mount Trio Estate Shiraz Porongurup Western Australia
Review Date: 8-16-2014

Rich, ripe, juicy Shiraz with wonderfully bright aromatics and tons of soft fleshy mid palate weight. Quite a fruit driven style but with lovely savory / earthy nuances to keep it varietally correct and not moving into "fruit bomb" territory. Big, bold flavors but with ample balance and freshness. Asian spices show on the finish that is long and silky. This is sure to be a hit and won't last long.
