Staff Favorites

If you’re going to have Robert Parker or Stephen Tanzer over for dinner, selecting a wine they’ve rated highly will be a nice choice. However, when you’re buying wines for yourself, we’d love to see you find wines that match up your unique palate and pocketbook. We have a large staff of friendly and knowledgeable wine professionals that taste hundreds of wines each week. They can put you in touch with bottles that you are likely to love, often at a much lower cost than the highly-rated gems that often see a run-up in price and frequent availability issues. Like any great group of opinionated professionals, our staff has varied tastes themselves. Often our customers will find a particular staff member with a style that corresponds to their own. That concept works extremely well in our retail stores, and this section is our effort to bring you the same online. Don’t get us wrong, we love the highly rated wines from the press and will continue to offer them, but we think you’re missing out if you’re not augmenting those selections with picks from our excellent staff. Here are their favorites. (Click on a name to see their other selections - or to drop them a line.) Cheers!

2008 Kalinda Napa Valley Chardonnay
By: Jim Barr | Review Date: 8/5/2009 | Send Email
This year's harvest has to be smaller than normal, with a once-again cold spring and most of the summer (last time I wrote that, we experienced a prolonged heat wave). I have no feel for this harvest, as I did last year, which brings me to the fact that I may have made a judgment error regarding last year's harvest quality. And I do not know why, since I do not make mistakes about such aspects of this nature, and that alone has caught me off guard. The samples that I have tasted from wineries primarily in the North Coast from last year and from what I have in barrel and have bottled thus far have totally amazed me. Most of the wines are totally complete, with Cabernet and Pinot Noir showing incredible structure depth and superb balance. So, why? "Hang time" has been written off as pure nonsense and essentially mythical, but it would seem this concept, which I firmly believe in, might be true. The 2008 California wines are showing intense characteristics and richness. The 2008 vintage in Bordeaux that was written off as a loser because of all the weird weather during spring and summer (read Clyde's '08 Bordeaux report), is suddenly showing up as a stunning vintage, with immense proportions of character and depth, with self-anointed "Mr. Wine God" going ballistic over it. Hang Time! That is what this vintage is all about in California and Bordeaux, and you cannot explain this kind of natural concentration and intensity of flavor by writing off "hang-time" as being mythical. If you want evidence of the above assertion, you must try our newly-released Kalinda 2008 Napa Valley Chardonnay, made for us by the same "cult" winery that produced our 2007, which sold out within six weeks of its release after some of you discovered who it was. This is a full-blown Chardonnay that provides a real tropical, white peach and spicy cinnamon apple set of varietal smells and flavors enclosed in a creamy/vanillin tone that provides richness, viscosity, and lushness. There's good acidity here to not make it flabby and the finish is long and intense. Sort of like a Rombauer, but unlike "R," it is dry and offers structure, and it's half the price. This Gem will be one of our house whites for September according to The Beaner. 15.4% abv.

This is by far one of Kalinda's best overall vintages of Chardonnay! Trust my palate one this one, it will overwhelm your tastebuds with all the delights of its rich Napa fruit showing tropical pinapple, peach, baked apples and spice. Creamy notes of honeysuckle, vanilla creme, and toast are balanced out by the amazing acidity and shocking structure! This is the perfect wine for fall because it will stand up to all the wonderful autumn flavors and foods of harvest! Drink up and fall in love!

You have to try our new Kalinda 2008 Pinot Gris, Marlborough, New Zealand ($11.99), not because it is our first with this varietal under our private label, but because it is really good stuff. From New Zealand’s south island, this wine offers pretty perfumed smells, a bright, yet viscous mouthfeel that makes it the perfect white wine for your holiday parties. Eby says that this will be our holiday party white for the month. 13% abv [Jim Barr]

Another fantastic buy from the awesome 2007 vintage. A big style with dark fruits, a bit of glycerin and loads of black cherries. Big mouthfeel with great texture. Drinking well now and will also age for the next 4-5 years. Fruit from vines that average 60-70 years old. A great buy!

2007 Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara Pinot Noir
By: Gary Westby | Review Date: 8/22/2008 | Send Email
Southern California Pinots and I rarely get along, they are usually a bit overripe and too pumped up with Syrah for my delicate, Champagne-loving palate, but as usual ABC has made a wine that is the exception rather than the rule. Like the great BV "Burgundy" of years past, this Pinot is blended with Monduese (24&) - a relatively obscure Rhone varietal. This has quite the opposite effect of the more common "secret" blending partner of Pinot, Syrah, and makes for a quite elegant, understated partner. The wine is translucent and raspberry colored, with a spicy, wild, natural and even a touch savory pinot nose. It has great balance on the palate and a nice medium bodied texture. At 13.5% alcohol, I promise it will go with dinner- no fire extinguisher needed! This is California Pinot Noir to be excited about, and it does not break the bank.

2007 Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara Pinot Noir

Given the rise in prices for Pinot Noir grapes over the past few years, it has become virtually impossible to find a great wine for under $20. Look no further. This 2007 Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir has everything you could want. Tangy red fruits and spice - raspberry, cranberry, and cinnamon. Lovely character and length. A perfect companion for the Thanksgiving holiday.

How Exciting! Finally a California Pinot Noir beautifully balanced and made in a Burgundian style! Not overly excracted and overripe, but rather feminine, spicy, with a touch of earthy floral notes as well. Vibrant fresh fruit on the nose, medium bodies and silky smooth with subtle tannins on the finish. My absolute FAVORITE Central Coast pinot for a price thats more than affordable!

2007 Chalone Estate Chardonnay
By: Alex Pross | Review Date: 7/8/2009 | Send Email
Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image
One of the most famed and consistent producers of Central Coast Chardonnay, Chalone has once again fashioned an outstanding and affordable Chardonnay. Chalone was one of the first wineries to realize the vast potential of the Central Coast to grow both world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. The first vintage to be produced under the Chalone label was in 1966 and from that humble beginning the name Chalone has become synonymous with Central Coast Chardonnay. The 2007 Chalone Chardonnay is a great example of what heights this region is capable of reaching with a wine that has vibrant nose of honey, acacia flowers and racy tropical fruit aromas. On the palate this wine displays admirable balance and weight with gorgeous fruit, racy minerality and a honeyed richness that makes this wine irresistible. If you're looking for a knock-out Chardonnay for under $20 then this is the wine for you.

Consisting of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and 5% Cincault, this wine is made from from vines averaging 45 years. Getting the opportunity to taste this CNdP with its 23 year old propietor Alexandre Favier, I was completely impressed with how open and accessible this young wine is and how motivated and passionate Alexandre is too. The wine has great full bodied black fruit and a layered, supple palate with hints of kirsch and pepper.

I know that the 2007 vintage in the Rhone is all the rage these days, and rightly so. However some of the 2006 Chateauneufs are drinking really well right now. The Chante Cigale is an example of this. With a dark plum color, and a fruit profile of cherries, plums, and cassis. All framed by intense spiciness and minerality. Very approachable and pleasing right now.

2007 Kalinda Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
By: Jim Barr | Review Date: 7/9/2009 | Send Email
Our new 2007 Kalinda Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has arrived and it is totally reflective of this great harvest. Deep ruby in color, the nose explodes with cassis, currants and Rutherford dust which carries over into its hugely complex, broad, viscous, structured, focused mouth presentation. There is a core of sweet varietal fruit here that is supported by cedary oak and really fine, silky tannins. The finish lingers for at least 2 minutes and 37 seconds. It will age easily another 7 to 10 years. Get some air to it if you plan to drink it near term. Anderson plans on drinking it now.

The perfect wine for fall and the holidays coming up! Literally drinking more beautifully than ever before, the 2007 vintage shines over many cabs I've tried that are twice and three times the price! With aromas of brambly boysenberry, cocoa and spice on the nose, followed by a fleshy and velvety mouthfeel full of ripe concentrated black and red fruit, with silky yet griping tannins, this is a for sure hit at any event! I love it because it carries complexity and layers that far exceed expectations.

2008 was a big vintage for New Zealand…so big, in fact, that Omaka Springs decided to use some of their highly regarded fruit to make a second label wine: Southern Lights. Omaka Valley is in the heart of Marlborough’s wine growing region and is characterized by its well-drained stony soils and long dry growing season with warm sunny days and cool nights. This is a classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc bursting with grapefruit and gooseberry flavors intermingled with just a hint of that classic Kiwi grassy note. There are plenty of warm days left in California, so stock up…this is a tasty everyday wine you do not want to pass up!

This is a classic example that, even if a wine is classified as a simple "Vin de Pays," done by a quality conscious winemaker, it can be marvelous! And this one is just that. A Viognier that is classic and very affordable. A beautiful nose of peaches, nectarines, and an array of delicate flowers. With only 12.5% alcohol I can honestly use the word "delicate" (God knows I have tasted 16% alcohol Viogniers, which resemble gasoline more than wine! I shall not reveal their names...). 2008 Achával Ferrer Malbec Mendoza
By: Keith Mabry | Review Date: 6/1/2009 | Send Email
Achaval Ferrer has been one of my favorite Southern Hemisphere producers for quite some time. Their single-vineyard Malbecs are world-class and beautifully balanced wines. This year they have elevated the 2008 Malbec to new heights. Not that it was ever a disappointment but this year it has that extra something special. Gorgeous raspberry and boysenberry fruit interlaced with hints of smoke, graphite and spicebox. A finish that lingers elegantly. The only thing that surprised me more were the 2007 single vineyard wines. Considering those are four times the price, the regular Malbec is an excellent jumping on point.

This is a cuvee from several of the estate vineyards. Unlike the previous wine, this wine sees a small percentage new oak. This is a serious wine for an extremely reasonable price. What is immediately noticeable it the minerality of this wine, starting on the nose it resonates though out the wine, especially on it vibrant finish! The palate is modestly generous with plenty of lemon and stone fruit tones that seemed to be etched into the wine. The touch of oak gives a hint of spice and there is a slight creaminess that adds depth and richness. This wine over performs for the price!

This is sophisticated white Burgundy that hasn't forgot how to be a good time. This Pouilly-Fuisse has the classic flint and haunting, elusive fruit that I look for in good wines from Macon, but a lot more complexity than I would expect from this region- especially at $19.99. I think this is a must try for any fan of white Burgundy, even if you are lucky enough to be accustomed to Puligny and Chassagne. For that matter, I think it is a must try for any fan of Chardonnay. Antech "Emotion" Cremant de Limoux Rosé

When you hear that the folks in Limoux believe themselves to be the creative force behind the "methode champagnois," one wonders how they could get away with such outrageous claims. Tasting something like this brings their argument some serious credibility. A beautiful light salmon color, and a very light mousse, this wine pours just like a rosé Champagne for a quarter of the price. Attractively packaged, a more elegant sparkling rosé for this price does not exist.

Bargain bubbles! A really nice bottle of sparkling wine that is elegant and crisp. Fresh raspberry and Bing cherry flavors with a touch of cream. I used it as an apertif with finger foods and it went over so well that I could have used a second bottle!
