Staff Favorites

If you’re going to have Robert Parker or Stephen Tanzer over for dinner, selecting a wine they’ve rated highly will be a nice choice. However, when you’re buying wines for yourself, we’d love to see you find wines that match up your unique palate and pocketbook. We have a large staff of friendly and knowledgeable wine professionals that taste hundreds of wines each week. They can put you in touch with bottles that you are likely to love, often at a much lower cost than the highly-rated gems that often see a run-up in price and frequent availability issues. Like any great group of opinionated professionals, our staff has varied tastes themselves. Often our customers will find a particular staff member with a style that corresponds to their own. That concept works extremely well in our retail stores, and this section is our effort to bring you the same online. Don’t get us wrong, we love the highly rated wines from the press and will continue to offer them, but we think you’re missing out if you’re not augmenting those selections with picks from our excellent staff. Here are their favorites. (Click on a name to see their other selections - or to drop them a line.) Cheers!

2008 Tessier Cheverny Rouge
By: David Driscoll | Review Date: 8/30/2009 | Send Email
The Tessier rouge is always a great wine, nevertheless this year they have decided to tamper with the formula a bit. The result is another success. The addition of malbec to the pinot noir/gamay blend has resulted in a fuller and softer wine that I think many newcomers may latch onto a little easier. The earthiness and funk have been smoothed out by the softness of the malbec fruit, but the cherries and perfume still linger. One of the true deals in our store.

What an enjoyble wine! Bright red fruit, light in the mouth, energetic and vibrant. It's the perfect red for sipping with friends, or perhaps pairing with a roasted chicken, even braised meat if you're in the mood for something lighter and brighter to contrast with the dish. Tessier's wines are amongst my favorite Loire direct imports in the store, and this delightful red really brings the goods this vintage.

2007 Château de Montfaucon "Baron Louis" Côtes du Rhône
By: Jim Barr | Review Date: 10/13/2009 | Send Email
We have been directly importing the outstanding Rhone Valley wines of Chateau de Montfaucon since 1995 and, although many of you know our story of this property, I think that it is still appropriate to repeat. This 85+ acre estate lies across the Rhone River from the village of Chateauneuf-Du-Pape and its red and white wine grape make-up are similar to what goes into making CDPs. The problem, however, is that the river is the appellation line and Montfaucon, therefore, cannot be called CDP, and is relegated to a general Cotes-Du-Rhone classification. My attitude is that if it smells and tastes like CDP, than treat it like CDP. With that out of the way, I can tell you that the 2007 Cotes-Du-Rhones from Montfaucon are the best that I have tasted from this estate since we have been importing them. Produced from their older sections of the vineyard (60 to 90 year old vines), the Cuveé Baron Louis 2007 Cotes-Du-Rhone from Montfaucon (which is 40% grenache, 15% syrah, 15% cinsault, and 10% each of carignan, mourvedre, and counoise) would be a great and classic CDP if wasn’t for that #*&^ river. With its deep, richly appearing hue, the opulent, perfumed nose of blackberry, purple plum, white pepper spiciness, and hints of smoked meats and forest floor explodes from the glass. Concentrated, lush, and broad fruit in the mouth that is complex, yet soft and round with silky tannins, leads to a long, warm, on-going finish. I plan to lay this Gem down for a few years to give it additional development, but it is an amazingly wonderful wine now, particularly with decanting and airing. (Jim Barr)

2007 Cotes du Rhones are my go-to wines right now and the "Baron Louis" from Montfaucon is hands down the insider trading secret of the vintage and region. This cuvee could easily stand up to the big boys in CDnP but fortunately for us, cannot legally be called so, and therefore comes to us a steal of price!

This is a regular label here at K&L. Year after year brings a high quality, reasonably priced wine. The 2007 is no exception. Grenache and Syrah make up most of the blend. A bright, balanced wine with blue, red and black fruit with a hint of smoke, earthiness and acid beautifully integrated.

Chardonnay, Plaisir des Princes
By: Jim Barr | Review Date: 9/2/2009 | Send Email
We haven’t had Plaisir des Princes Chardonnay ($8.99) from the Macon area of Burgundy in stock for at least a year, mainly due to Keith’s (our Burgundy wine buyer) rather low standards of wanting really good wine for that label. This is 2008 Macon that has been declassified as such, and, as usual, without a vintage by Alain Corcia and is a Gem-of-a-wine. It is clean, crisp, and very appealing on the nose and in the mouth, with pippin-apple-like characteristics and a subtle lushness that carries into its lovely finish. The last time we had this in stock, we flew through the several hundred cases that were available in several weeks. Sooo, don’t linger. It will disappear. This will be our house white for October, according to The Beaner and Eby. 12.5% abv

Chardonnay, Plaisir des Princes

An excellent French chardonnay at a great price! Although not labeled as such, the fruit for this bottling comes from the Macon. On the nose I get a hint of light hay and fresh citrus. A simple sip provides subtle flavors of apple, pear, and a light spice. This is a refreshing and lively chardonnay that will help send these hot August days packing!

This delightful, honeyed Chardonnay is the perfect refrigerator door wine- it will hold up for days with a cork in it, and is as tasty as the aperitif as it is with lighter fare. The wine is light, but not lean and has a hint of mellow fruitiness to balance out its refreshing zing.

Full and rich, this 2003 is showing all of the warmth and ripeness of the vintage. The body of the wine is supported with more tannin and acidity than other Haut-Medocs that I have tried, giving the wine freshness and balance. I would enjoy this wine over the next 3-5 years.

If you are a fan of wines that exhibit more earthy, barnyard flavors as well as fruit, this wine is for you. Subtle cherry aromas dominate the nose, but on the palate the fruit takes a back seat to more earth and spice. Plenty of tannins and acidity give the wine structure, and the finish is all barnyard and earth. This is a school night wine at only $14.99, and it will go great with dinner.

I've hand sold this wine to many Redwood City customers and gotten nothing but rave reviews in return. This Cab from Washington is everything you need in an elegant, full-bodied, smooth-drinking Cab.   'In wildness is the preservation of the vine', to paraphrase Thoreau as my response to the utterly compelling wines of Les Clos Perdus (The Lost Vineyards), a tiny winery born from the beautiful, perfumed scrubland and poor, stony soils of Corbieres and Rousillon in Southwestern France. Resurrecting singularly-unique, isolated or neglected parcels of vines scattered throughout the rugged hillsides is no small effort, and winemaker Paul Olds, a former professional touring dancer, has since 2003 followed his 'other' passion by fully embracing and immersing himself in biodynamic principles of winemaking. The rich result, I'm happy to report, are distinctive wines of grace, complexity and above all, terroir. The 2006 Prioundo, made from 70% old vine Grenache and 30% Cinsaut, is scented with dried roses, violets, black tea, earth and tinges of lavender, leading to an expressive palate of ripe red fruits, supple, powdered tannins and a caressive, lingering finish. A very memorable wine to enjoy with most Mediterranean-inspired or Provencal dishes.
