Staff Favorites

If you’re going to have Robert Parker or Stephen Tanzer over for dinner, selecting a wine they’ve rated highly will be a nice choice. However, when you’re buying wines for yourself, we’d love to see you find wines that match up your unique palate and pocketbook. We have a large staff of friendly and knowledgeable wine professionals that taste hundreds of wines each week. They can put you in touch with bottles that you are likely to love, often at a much lower cost than the highly-rated gems that often see a run-up in price and frequent availability issues. Like any great group of opinionated professionals, our staff has varied tastes themselves. Often our customers will find a particular staff member with a style that corresponds to their own. That concept works extremely well in our retail stores, and this section is our effort to bring you the same online. Don’t get us wrong, we love the highly rated wines from the press and will continue to offer them, but we think you’re missing out if you’re not augmenting those selections with picks from our excellent staff. Here are their favorites. (Click on a name to see their other selections - or to drop them a line.) Cheers!

2007 Cave de Rasteau "Dame Victoria" Côtes du Rhône-Villages Rasteau
By: Mari Keilman | Review Date: 7/28/2009 | Send Email
The 2007 vintage from the Rhone Valley is fantastic and the "Dame Victoria" is the perfect example of why. I loved this wine in 2006 but in 2007 its gone to a whole new level. While the 2006 had the amazing floral and spice aromatics with tons of precise berry fruit that the '07 has, its how beautifully integrated the tannins are, without losing its rustic charm, that make the '07 top notch.

Here is another Rhone from the 2007 vintage that exceeds its price in quality. On the nose lots of floral, herbs and blackberry fruit. The wine has nice structure with good acidity and prominent tannins with dried herbs and black fruit.

A perfect wine for those willing to venture into the "old world" but not still fully commited to do so. Full of dark berries and soft tannins but with plenty of the Rhone spices and elegance. A Coq-au-Vin will be delicious with it, also a Basque Chicken, Roast Duck, Turkey with traditional trimmings, Gratin Dauphinois and how about a decadent dish of Goose stuffed with prunes?

2007 Cave de Rasteau "Dame Victoria" Côtes du Rhône-Villages Rasteau
By: Jim Barr | Review Date: 8/19/2009 | Send Email
For the last 35 years, my wine tasting group, The Wednesday Night Fatally-Flawed Palates, have done a blind tasting the first Wednesday of every month, and this month’s (August 2009) featured the 2007s from the Southern region of the Rhône Valley, with the primary focus on Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Seven wines were tasted and compared, six of which were from CdP(Paul Autard, Alain Corcia Cuveé Julie, Alain Corcia Cuveé Patricia, Alain Corcia Cuveé Herve, Pierre Usseglio Cuveé Tradition, and Château Fortia Cuveé Baron) and one from Rasteau (Cave de Rasteau "Dame Victoria" Côtes du Rhône-Villages Rasteau). The '07 Rhône Valley vintage is a great one and, because of that, this tasting was an incredibly difficult one to judge in that the overall quality was outstanding to extraordinary. In fact, the total point separation was only 22 points based on each individual’s ranking (among 16 tasters) between the first and last place ranked wines, which is unheard of with this group. I cannot remember seeing such close scores. Every single wine in the tasting, for that matter, had at least two firsts. The biggest complaint with the members of the group seemed to be, "How do you rate these incredible wines?" The seventh place wine, behind the Alain Corcia Cuveé Patricia, with a total of 72 points was the Cave de Rasteau 2007 "Dame Victoria" Côtes du Rhône-Villages Rasteau. As with the Cuveé Patricia, I believe the majority of the tasting group was off base with judging this wine (that's why they are called Fatally Flawed Palates). The '07 Cave de Rasteau is the essence of Grenache in its purist form and I think some of the tasting group thought it was too different from all the characteristics of the '07 CdPs in the tasting. Medium-deep ruby in color, its opulent bouquet provides tons of juicy red-fruited Grenache aromas with backnotes of dried rose petals and white pepper spiciness. Fleshy, rich, and full, this gem has superb balance and complexity, is bright and lively, supported by soft, silky tannins, and has a concentrated, long finish. Great value!!! (My score: 19 points – I use the UC Davis 20 Point scoring system, still – and a third place personal ranking with an aging potential of 3 to 6+ years...)

There are many wonderful options from the 2007 vintage from the Southern Rhone in stock right now. The secret is to find the best values, and this blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre from the village of Rasteau in the Rhone is one not to miss. It is full of red fruit, spice, and a touch of smokey, earthiness. The palate is rich, with a deep core of ripe fruit flavor. The long finish and balanced acidity shows off its special origins. I like to serve it from carafes at large dinner parties. It is a food-friendly, delicious table red that, well, will help keep you out of the red come party time.

Champagne for the people! Every time I pour this wonderful Champagne I know it blushes at me. A slightly pink hue encompasses a wonderfully dark straw color. In my house, this is the Champagne that can never be far from reach. I have always been impressed by the color of this champagne as well as its subtle, creamy nose and the fruity, yeasty feel of the Carte Blanche’s wonderful fruit. Two bottles, six bottles, an entire case you say? It may be enough to get me through until the nest boat arrives from France! Don’t miss this one!

Ripe blackcurrant notes, supple tannins, and just the slightest hint of moist earth and coffee bean are what I most enjoy about this robust wine.   Fresh off de boat! Just tried this last Saturday night (4th of July). Those of you who are fans, don't be confused by the new Aspasie label! It's the same wine you have loved for years! Loads of raspberry, strawberry and bing cherry fruit. Hints of minerality hit the tongue and make this a winner for those of you who like the Billecart-Salmon style at a greatly reduced price.   This wine is always our answer to the Billecart Salmon, which by the way sells for more than twice as much. This is all about the red Ariston fruit and their champagnes are permanent staff picks. Cherry notes from the pinot noir, crisp and vibrant acidity and brioche flavors swirl together with delicate bubbles. Anyone care for some?

Those of you who fell in love with the 2005 vintage of this wine and have not yet tried the new version are in for a treat as this might be even better. This has tons of sweet vanilla and cherry aromas but with much darker fruit flavors mid-palate than the '05 had. 2007 Jean-Louis Denois Syrah "Saint Louis" Vin de Pays d'Oc

Ripe red fruit and whiffs of cinnamon and spice lure you into this super-drinkable Syrah. Just a touch of oak adds chocalate nuances. The palate is balanced, with red and black fruit and smokey flavors balanced by nice acidity. A refreshing alternative to the super-ripe, jammy syrahs of the new world, and not as dark and brooding (or expensive) as many syrahs from the Northern Rhone. Drink and enjoy.

The 2007 Saint Louis syrah reminds me of one thing. Crozes Hermitage. Plush berry fruits, matched by just a hint of lavender and wet stone make this syrah one that I recommend most often to customers looking for a more elegant, yet modestly priced rendition of this varietal. My latest succesful encountere with this wine involved a selection of cheeses, tapenade on grilled bread, and several slices of pissaladerie (Nicoise, olive, onion and anchovy pizza). Delicious!

I loved 2005 Ch. Sansonnet, a fine St-Emilion property, and I was thrilled to be offered their second wine (in France, Lasalle) as a base for our Clos Kalinda, which also has some Sansonnet blended in. The expressive bouquet offers a succession of cherry, cinnamon and fine toasted oak. On the palate, the flavor is at the same time fruity and woody. Supple in the mouth, fine chewy tannins, flavors of black fruit, and a very good finish. Like almost all of the 2005 Bordeaux, this wine should be decanted if you are drinking it now. Wonderful with prime-rib dinner.

Lots of ripe black currant flavors, good earthy structure, but with a softer and smoother style that should be more open to being enjoyed in its youth.   We tried this bubbly at a recent staff tasting and it blew me away. A blend of 50% chardonnay and 50% pinot noir done in the traditional Champagne method, this sparkler from the Languedoc could easily pass itself off for Champagne. It was crisp on the nose and palate with limestone and slate minerality, apple fruit and a generous texture from attack to finish. A recent convert to bubbles, I’m going to keep plenty of this on-hand for impromptu celebrations.

New Zealand made a big splash on the international scene a few years back with their outstanding Sauvignon Blancs, and they are poised to do the same for Pinot Noir. This wine may very well be the best value in Pinot Noir in our entire inventory. The 2008 Sherwood is medium bodied and very much in the Burgundian style with a New World twist. Fans of Oregon Pinot Noir take note! Exotic fruits on the nose: pomegranate and orange zest. In the mouth, red fruits and spice: red plum and rhubarb and a hint of cinnamon. Perfectly paired with a range of dishes: New Zealand lamb with fresh thyme and lemon or plank smoked salmon.

I have told Mulan Chan, our Rhone Valley/Regional French wine buyer, that virtually every 2007 Rhone Valley wine, whether it is a regional CDR, village wine, or single vineyard village wine, that I have tasted reminds me of the wines that first came from the Rhone Valley from the great 1978 vintage. And, she keeps telling me that she has no frame of reference to that since she wasn’t born at that time. Trust me, they are. There are some amazing values to be had, and the Domaine de Mayran 2007 Cotes du Rhone Villages is one of them. This is grenache driven and provides tons of bright cherry-like to spicy licorice-like fruit both in the nose and in its lively, flashy palate impression. Anderson has informed that this will be one of our house reds for the holidays. Enjoy it now and do not age it – it’s ready; drink it. [Jim Barr]

I'm always excited to taste Bordeaux, and when I saw that the 2003 La Lagune was opened I was very excited to get to see how this wine was progressing. If this wine is any indication of what the 2003 Bordeaux vintage has to offer down the road, then we are all in for a treat. The 2003 La Lagune was excellent! A sumptuous ruby red in the glass followed by aromas of red berries, volcanic rock and slight nuances of mocha-laced oak. On the palate, the wine displayed amazing balance and complexity with rich, satisfying red fruit nicely balanced by fine tannins.   The textural soils of Saumur contain large amounts of tuffeau, a creamy calcareous stone that was excavated for the building of châteaux and even sent abroad for the reconstruction of London following the Great Fire. The remaining caves were ideal for growing incredible mushrooms and cellaring fine wine, two things the locals knew a lot about. Cabernet Franc flourishes in the cool climate of the Loire, and I have to credit our own epicurean Eric Story with discovering this phenomenal version, a vineyard in a bottle that will sate the appetite, abolish thirst and ballast spirits! Serious, beautifully-balanced wine at an unbelievable price.

One of the more inconceivable reds, that has some bottle age on it, that I have ever tasted is the Abadal 2001 Pla de Bages, Reserva, a recent discovery by our Spanish wine buyer, Joe Manekin,. The great wine god of the world gave this Gem 90 points with a remarkable review, which I think is a case of temporary insanity on his part (it should be a near perfect score), this blend of merlot (60%), cabernet (30%), syrah (10%) and incredibleness (100%) is deep ruby in color, explodes from the glass with lush, developed currants and blackberries, with cedary undertones, that leads to a fleshy, broad, complex, deep mouthfeel and a round, silky finish.   The Cuvee Le Bec blend is consistently a great value. The 2007 is a full-bodied, characterful red that will outshow more expensive alternatives in any blind tasting. The nose is full of red and blue fruit, spice, a touch of smokey-gamey notes. In the mouth the texture is very silken, a pleasure to drink. The flavors of fruit and spice echo the nose, with darker fruit and savory herb notes coming forward. Medium tannins and a smooth, flavorful finish make for a wine that is full enough to stand up to hearty meat dishes, but restrained where it matters so as to not be over the top. A stellar buy at $18.99.

2008 Tessier Cheverny Rouge

Three of my favorite red wine grapes go into this delicious wine! Gamay, Pinot Noir and Malbec contribute to light scents of cherry and a hint of spice. In the mouth, the cherry and raspberry continues to refresh, while a subtle amount of acidity and a fine texture begins to show after a little air interacts with the wine. I say grab a cedar plank, a salmon fillet, fire up the grill, and pop open a bottle of the Tessier!

I love this wine! The nose is redolent of Gamay while the palate shows bright Gamay and Pinot with a hint of Cot (Malbec) in the lower register. Wonderful with food now, this wine will improve with a bit of bottle age--if you have the patience. If not, savor it now and ponder how Philippe Tessier can do it for $13.99.

2008 Tessier Cheverny Rouge

I just recently tasted this wine in a lineup of 12 other power-packed reds, and this bright red-fruited blend of Gamay, Pinot Noir and Cot(malbec) stood out against the crowd of big, jammy, over-extracted contenders. This bottle of red is everything that I look for in a wine. Spicey pepper aromatics with a tinge of kirsch liquer, bright red cherry fruit, and raspberry dominate the nose. While the light to medium body palate comes packed with even more cherry and raspberry fruit and the perfect balance of acidity to round out this incredible red.
